Energy Flow is the Principle of Life
When you look at the natural flow of water, however small it may be, it awakens an energetic feeling of power and calmness at the same time. Wherever water is flowing, there is life. One step deeper, by way of observing living water, you can get a grasp of the source of life itself. This truth is mirrored in the Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), when they look at the chi energy flow. Herein lies the secret for vitality and health, because every blockage of the energy system reduces chi, the life energy and therefore causes stress.
Well, is it possible to improve your energy? Before we answer that question, let us look closer at the optimal experience of flow. I’ve found very helpful insights in Positive Psychology, because it studies that which works in life and not merely the pathological deviations.
Psychology of Flow Offers New Perspectives
In western tradition we can describe this phenomenon of flow in psychological terms, i.e. with emotions and feelings of ultimate bliss. In a nutshell, the only thing that counts is the action here and now where every separation between the experiencer and the experience is suspended. Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi, a Hungarian Psychologist, has devoted his life to the investigation of flow. He identified six factors that constitute the so called flow experience:
- intense and focused concentration on the present moment
- merging of action and awareness
- a loss of reflective self-consciousness
- a sense of personal control or agency over the situation or activity
- a distortion of temporal experience, one’s subjective experience of time is altered
- experience of the activity as intrinsically rewarding, also referred to as autotelic experience
But what about the obstructions of flow?
Once you’ve got a taste of this flow you’re eager to reach this state of consciousness again. So, it’s indeed possible to improve your energy, the quality of life overall. In order to get there, we need to examine the factors which lie in the way of a natural flow. In nature, water flows freely and seeks its way in harmony with the surroundings. Why isn’t that the case with us human beings? Why do we suffer so much stress from innumerable blockages and unnatural confinements? And what causes one to say: “I am the shadow of my true self.”?
My goal developing this whole project is to look for conditions that unlock the potential of each and everyone and foster the experience of flow. By and by, I’m going to disclose the secret power of the heart. But first, let me pay attention to the sweeping disorder in human lives, to the question: can stress affect you?
